Anh Louis Lê, một tình nguyện viên tại đền Quan Âm cho biết, một bức tượng sư tử tại đây đã bị một người đội mũ trùm đầu dùng búa tạ đập vỡ. Cuộc tấn công đầu tiên này xảy ra khoảng 3 tuần trước. Trong thời gian gần đây, ngôi đền này lại bị tấn công trở lại.
Anh Lê cũng cho biết thêm, nhiều cuộc tấn công khác cũng xảy ra ở các địa điểm như tượng sư tử ở cổng khu phố Tàu, đền Thiên Tôn và đền Huyền Khuông.
Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn với Next Shark, anh Lê cho biết họ từng nghĩ sự việc đầu tiên chỉ là một cuộc tấn công ngẫu nhiên. Tuy nhiên, họ dần nhận ra những vụ phá hoại liên tiếp này không đơn giản như vậy. Bày tỏ trên mạng xã hội Facebook, anh Lê cho rằng cộng đồng châu Á tại thành phố Montreal hiện đang bị nhắm đến bởi các cá nhân kỳ thị.
Theo tờ Next Shark đưa tin, cảnh sát thành phố Montreal hiện đang điều tra các hành động phá hoại như một tội ác kỳ thị. Một đơn vị tuần tra của cảnh sát cũng được bố trí trong khu vực này. Tuy nhiên, anh Lê cho rằng những điều trên có thể vẫn không đủ để ngăn chặn những kẻ tấn công. A wave of vandalism has hit several sites frequented by Montreal's Asian communities, prompting police to treat the incidents as potential hate crimes.
Statues and religious symbols were smashed recently at two Buddhist temples and one cultural centre. The lion statues at the entrances to Chinatown were also vandalised with paint.
"Since these acts targeted religious symbols, they will be treated as hate crimes," a Montreal police spokesperson said in an email to Radio-Canada. "The investigation will uncover the motive behind these acts."
Louis Le, a 24-year-old army reservist and volunteer at the Chua Quan Am temple in Côte-des-Neiges, posted on Facebook about the incidents. The post went viral.
"The Asian community in Montreal is currently being targeted with hate crimes as we speak," he wrote. "We can't just let 'em get away with it."

A pattern of vandalism
When Anh Kiet le Van found sculptures and religious symbols at his Buddhist temple smashed in early February, he first thought it was the work of an angry neighbour.
The Chua Quan Am temple, where Kiet works as a custodian, has been undergoing construction. He wondered if someone had been bothered by the noise.
But then the temple was vandalized again on the night of Feb. 22. Surveillance footage shows someone with a weapon resembling a sledgehammer repeatedly striking the statues, and then walking away.

Kiet also heard about similar incidents at other Buddhist temples in the city, and now no longer believes the attacks on his temple were isolated.
On the other end of the city, at the Thuyen Ton Buddhist Association in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Buddhist nun Tran Dinh said she found several of the organization's statues partially destroyed last Friday.
"I'm very sad," she said. "A little angry."
Less than two kilometres away, the lion statues outside the Huyen Khong Buddhist Socio-Cultural Centre were also damaged recently.
"Why did these people attack our statues?" Dinh asked.

Tensions toward the Asian community
Le believes the spread of the novel coronavirus, and misinformation about the health crisis, has led people to lash out at the Asian community.
He said it's frustrating that "these things happen in 2020 … for completely stupid reasons."
After the statues at his temple were smashed the first time, Le volunteered to help repair them, only for the vandals to strike again.
"Seeing my work being destroyed by a faceless coward enrages me to no end," he wrote in his Facebook post.
Kiet and Le both said they hope the police will take the case seriously, especially since the temples affected are often crowded on weekends.

Plusieurs statues, incluant des bouddhas, ont été détruites ou partiellement détruites par des actes haineux; j'espère pouvoir accumuler des fonds pour contribuer à l’achat de statues de remplacement. Ces endroits sont des lieux de refuge pour les pratiquants bouddhistes, mais cette sécurité est présentement ébranlée dû à l'hystérie qui entoure le coronavirus. Contribuons à rassurer ces communautés que Montréal ne tolère pas ces types d'actions et que tous et toutes sont les bienvenus dans notre ville.
Les statues originales venaient du Vietnam. Malgré le fait que leurs remplacements seront dispendieux, n'importe quel montant aidera a alléger les coûts à prévoir. Les bouddhistes pratiquent le dana, une pratique de générosité pour aider à soutenir leur communauté; cette pratique perdure depuis déjà plus de 2500 ans. The Chua Quan Am Pagoda, the Thuyen Ton Buddhist Association, and the Huyen Khong Buddhist socio-cultural center have all been victims of vandalism. Several statues, including Buddhas, were destroyed or partially destroyed by hateful acts; I hope to accumulate funds to help purchase replacement statues. These places are places of refuge for Buddhist practitioners, but their security is currently undermined due to the hysteria surrounding the coronavirus. Let us help reassure these communities that Montreal does not tolerate these types of actions and that everyone is welcome in our city.
The original statues came from Vietnam. Despite the fact that their replacements will be expensive, any amount will help reduce the expected costs. Buddhists practice dana, a practice of generosity to help support their community; this practice has been going on for over 2,500 years already.
